T. LECLERC In 1881, at the height of the fashion and beauty obsessed Belle Epoque (after all, it translates to the “beautiful period”), a renowned chemist named Theophile Leclerc opened his own pharmacy on the fashionable Place de la Madeleine to serve the elegant madams and swells of Paris. The progressive young chemist was interested in more than just potions and elixirs . . . he was interested in beauty. During the period, there were certainly some kabuki-like face powders and heavy theatrical make-up available but they always left the wearer with a white, pallid complexion. So he set about the process of creating face powders that would illuminate the complexion, complement a wide range of skin tones and encourage the individual beauty of the wearer to come through. After much experimentation he refined a formula of face powders containing rice starch, zinc oxide and a wide variety of pigments that when blended would fit any skin tone. The innovative traditions of T.LeClerc continues from 30, Place de la Madeleine, the original pharmacy. Today is not very different from yesterday when it comes to the famous “magic powder”. It is still produced under the same rigorous demands for performance and quality and still packaged in the distinctive matte silver box in which it has been for over 100 years. |
